Dental Technician Job Requirements

Dental Technician is required to assist the dentists with a number of things and work in coordination with them. He is involved in a number of tasks such as preparing complete denture sets, partial dentures, crowns for the teeth, molds, crowns for the root canal teeth which has undergone treatment, preparing splints and other orthodontic treatment appliances which are used to protect the teeth and also help in straightening the same.

One may either pursue a long term course or may attend a short training program on the same after high school in order to become eligible for this position. There are various education and job requirements needed for this position and these are mentioned below.

Education Requirement

  • A high school diploma with good grades is the basic requirement. It is recommended to choose the medical stream during high school.
  • One is recommended to go for a 2 years formal training course in the field of dental technology if aspiring to become a dental technician.
  • Many employers also provide on-the-job training to high school pass outs with good grades.
  • Certain states/ employers may ask for certified technicians. In order to work at such places one needs to clear a certification.

Job Requirement

  • The candidate must be skilled in crafting and designing dental appliances like crowns, molds, retention plates, dentures, etc.
  • Candidates should have good listening ability and also be skilled in understanding the dental terminology.
  • Candidates should be able to work in association with the dentists, dental hygienists and other professionals.
  • Candidate must have good communication skills as they may be required to speak directly with the clients and understand their dental requirements.
  • Candidates should have sound knowledge about the dental procedures as only if they have good knowledge about the same would they be able to prepare proper dental appliances.
