Elementary Teacher Job Requirements

If you possess a knack of dealing with children, enjoying with them, you want to make the moments of their childhood count and teaching as a profession appeals to you, then nothing should hold you back from becoming an elementary school teacher. But apart from the comfortable working hours and the long summer and winter breaks, teaching can be a taxing job as it requires a lot preparation before you can stand in front of a class with confidence and teach them. The requirements needed for one to become an elementary school teacher depend on the kind of school you want to teach in: Public, Private or Charter.

But there are some basic requirements which need to be complied with.

Educational Requirements:

  • A high school diploma is the minimum basic, one need to begin with.
  • For being employed in an Elementary school, it is necessary to have a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, Early Childhood Development, etc.
  • In a lot of states, it is required that they should have finished their Masters or are even working towards its completion.
  • Either a B.A. or a B.S. degree must be obtained.
  • If one has pursued their graduation from some other course, and now they want to switch over to teaching at an Elementary School, you can go for the Alternate Teacher Certification, by taking a few classes.
  • To have a license granted by the State Board of Education which allows one to teach in the State one has to receive the license. This license should be renewed annually.
  • This license is a must for applying in the Public Schools, while many Private ones do not pay much attention to it.

Job Requirements:

  • One who has a felony conviction on record can never become an elementary school teacher.
  • In case of one who is over-achieving and would want teach bilingual students as well; they would need to take extra classes. Also it is preferable to have a second major in the bachelor’s program.
  • Sometimes, the schools prefer hiring a teacher if they have performed under the supervision of an experienced teacher.
  • The teachers need to be responsible, punctual, passionate, motivated, focused and dedicated.
  • They should be efficient at management and organization, and planning.
  • Skilled at vital computer applications like Corex, Microsoft word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Moviemaker, and Adobe. The teacher must also be comfortable with editing, social networking, typing and handling computer related work.
