Genetic Counsellor Job Requirements

A genetic counsellor is a person who is involved in providing counselling to the people who are affected by genetic disorders or to their families.

The genetic counsellors help people to understand the causes for various genetic disorders and help them to adapt to such conditions. The genetic counsellors also provide guidance to families that may have a chance of inheriting the genetic disorders.

Although a certification is not necessary for genetic counsellors, certified genetic counsellors stand a better chance of getting employed.

Education Requirements:

  • The genetic counsellors are required to have a bachelor degree in the field of biology or psychology.
  • It is preferred that a genetic counsellor has a master degree in the field of counselling or human genetics.
  • The need for graduation is very mandatory as the job involves paying a lot of attention to detail.
  • The genetic counsellor also needs to have profound knowledge on genetics.

  • The genetic counsellors are also advised to complete certifications to be more competent in the job seeking race.
  • The genetic counsellors also need to attend regular training and seminar sessions to keep them updated with the current trends.

  • The genetic counsellors also provide advice to the patients in meeting the challenges that arise due to genetic disorders.
