Insurance Agent Job Requirements

An insurance agent is an individual who is responsible for selling insurance policies and products and getting clients for an insurance company. They may work for a specific insurance company or may work as a freelancer being associated with number of insurance companies. An insurance agent may deal with either one type or various types of insurance like health, property, business, corporate, accidental etc. They check the database of the insurance company and make calls to the clients in order to fix an appointment. They explain details of an insurance product to the client and try to convince to take up a policy. They are the direct contact with the clients for the insurance company and responsible for the revenue generation of the organization.

Education Requirements:

  • An applicant must have a high school diploma or a GED equivalent
  • Some insurance companies hire candidates who have undergone a bachelors degree in subjects like finance, accounting or business
  • A individual with masters degree in finance and insurance has more preference for the job
  • An applicant with an advanced degree like MBA with specialization in finance has better opportunities.
  • A course that includes subjects like investment management, financial management, financial market, portfolio analysis and managerial economics also helps

Job Requirements:

  • The applicant must have undergone a licensing exam and have acquired the license to practice as an insurance agent
  • Must be aware about various insurance products and must keep himself updated with the best insurance products in the market
  • Needs to have excellent selling skills
  • Should have the ability to convince clients
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills
  • Needs to possess strong verbal communication skills
  • Needs to have good listening skills
